{"id":953,"date":"2015-10-06T08:59:30","date_gmt":"2015-10-06T08:59:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ukogl.org.uk\/?page_id=953"},"modified":"2026-09-09T15:01:05","modified_gmt":"2026-09-09T14:01:05","slug":"william-smith","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ukogl.org.uk\/blog\/william-smith\/","title":{"rendered":"William Smith&#8217;s Maps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.strata-smith.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The William Smith Interactive\u00a0Website<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1703\" src=\"https:\/\/ukogl.org.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/ws.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"132\" height=\"149\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To celebrate the Bicentennial of the publication of William Smith&#8217;s first edition of his Geological Map of England and Wales, a group of leading &#8216;Strata Smith&#8217; experts developed and launched a free-to-all educational resource, designed for teachers, students, academicians and anybody with an interest in the life and work of this visionary.<\/p>\n<p>Led by Peter Wigley, Peter Dolan, Tom Sharpe, Hugh Torrens and Dave Williams, \u00a0the site compiles a unique collection of digital Smith Maps sourced from the Geological Society, Oxford University Museum Of Natural History, the National Museum Of Wales, Stanford University and Nottingham University.<\/p>\n<p>The collection, along with all of Smith&#8217;s published and a number of unpublished county maps, can be compared not only across editions but also with modern geology, seismic, wells and topography. The site also provides a wealth of information on Smith himself and the principles of stratigraphy.
